Kansas City Downtown Airport Embarks on $3.5 Million Taxiway Improvement Project

 

KANSAS CITY, Mo., October 11, 2011 ---Workers from Ideker, Inc. have begun the first phase of the three-phase Taxiway Pavement Rehabilitation Program at Kansas City Downtown Airport (MKC). Kansas City Aviation Department employees are telling attendees of the National Business Aviation Association Convention in Las Vegas about the project and other recent airport improvements.

The $3.5 million project will include partial-depth pavement repairs, full-depth pavement removal and replacement, crack sealing, joint sealing and pavement markings on Taxiways F, K & G. The work will also include rehabilitation of the airfield lighting circuits, airfield lighting fixtures and airfield signs for the taxiways. Lighted airfield directional signage will be improved and revised to meet current FAA standards.

This work will be funded by a Federal Aviation Administration grant. The FAA will reimburse the Department 95 percent of eligible costs of these improvements at Downtown Airport.

In 2009, the Kansas City Aviation Department completed a $70 million refurbishment program at Downtown Airport. The projects did not include the taxiways currently under rehabilitation. Begun in 2005, the major work included razing and resurfacing both airport runways, bulldozing 40 old hangars and replacing them with 96 new hangars, runway safety projects and constructing general aviation terminal.

The Kansas City Airport System is an Enterprise Fund Department of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and is supported wholly by airport user charges. No general tax fund revenues are used for the administration, promotion, operation, or maintenance of the airports in the system.
